Gods and Goddesses

Today we started part 2 of our Greece unit, here are some of the notes I took:

Greeks had a unique relationship with their gods because they interacted with humans.

Posiden- 

  • King of the sea, rivers, floods, and earthquakes
  • interfered with Odesseyus when he was trying to get back home
Aphrodite- 
  • goddess of love, beauty, desire, and sexuality 
  • had lovers of men and gods
    • Ares (god), Adonis (demi-god), and Anchises (human)
Dionysus-
  • god of wine
  • son of Zeus and Semele
Zeus-
  • ruler of heaven and earth 
  • father of Athena
  • god of the sky, weather, thunder, lightning, law, order, and justice
  • had a temper
  • known for throwing lightning bolts
Athena- 

  • goddess of wisdom, skill, warfare, intelligence, battle strategy, and handicrafts
  • was born from Zeus' head fully formed and armored 
  • a special patron of heroes
  • the patron of Athens
Apollo- 
  • god of music, arts, knowledge, healing
  • Zeus was his father
  • Artemis was his twin sister
  • associated with the sun; his sister with the moon
Demeter-
  • goddess of grain, harvest, and agriculture
  • Zeuses sister
