Exam Day 1

So today we took the essay part of out December exam. Like I said in my last blog post I felt very confident in my essay and I hope to do really well on it. Today when we got to class we sat dow and almost immediately started writing. When I finished I had used up most of my time which is good. I also used a second page so I guess that's good because not a lot of people used a second sheet. I don't know if its because I have big handwriting or if i just wrote a thorough essay but I'm going to go with writing a good essay. I think i am prepared for the other part of the exam and I hope I do really well.

Essay Prep

Today in class we started writing our essays for Friday. I think I picked a relatively easy topic to write my essay on. Im nervous about Friday because even though i know my topic well, I don know how well ill do at remembering it and writing a strong essay off the top of my head. I think having an idea card will benefit the class a lot so we don't have as many facts to memorize. I think that will make our essays better and easier to grade so Mr. Schick if youre reading this PLEASE LET US USE AN INDEX CARD! thank you very much.

Quiz Day!!

So today in class we had a quiz. I didn't find it particularly hard but I also didn't find it easy either. I talked to a couple people who thought it was kinda hard too so that makes me feel better. I really hope I do good because I need to bring my B up to an A before exams. In class tomorrow and thursday we are going to start writing our essays for friday. I am pretty confident for my exam and I hope to do pretty good in it.

I don't know what to title this blog

Today in class we talked about which of the three videos we liked the best. Most of the class voted for the Khan Academy video so we watched it and played Okay Stop. We also have a quiz on Monday which I hope i do well in because I need the good grade. We also talked about John Carroll and its tuition. I think that we get a lot out of the school and the money we spend on tuition is well worth it. It's setting me up to go to a good college which is my main goal right now. Anyways Im planning on studying over the weekend so I ca do well before the exam.

Sub Work

Demographic Transition Kahn Academy:
  • Most countries have a positive growth rate
  • Religions promote large families which would increase the amount of people in their faith
  • Stage 2 is where most children stopped working and started going to school
Video from Kim Smith:
  • Since the Agricultural Revolution until the Industrial Revolution the worlds population only grew 67,000 people per year, now we gain that many people in 6-7 hours
  • We are experiencing exponential growth and it isn't expected to level off until 2050 when we hit 9-10 billion people
  • Some people believe that industrialization is the answer to overpopulation
Why Populations Grow:
  • The birth rate in less economic countries is way higher than the birth rate of economic countries
  • Japans population has experienced negative rates on RNI since 2007 and is expected to lose 21% of its population by 2050
  • High death rates in third world countries are due to wars, no access to medical knowledge, no clean water and no food
My favorite video was the one by Kim Smith. I think she did a good job putting the stages into perspective and i think i retained the most knowledge from that video.

Demographic transition videos

Today in class we read over the notes we took yesterday from the textbook pages. This concept is easy to understand if you think of it from a common sense standpoint. If you think about it, it makes sense how countries move from stage 1 to stage 2 and to the other stages. We also learned about the 5th stage. Italy and Japan are good examples of countries in the 5th stage. There are more people dying than babies being born which is causing a decline in the population. Eventually the population will seise to exist. We also watched two videos. One with a lady talking about what might happen in stage 5 and one explaining how all stages work.

Demographic Transition

Today we started talking about demographic transition. We started off by getting packets of pages from a textbook instead of the usual PowerPoint. We were tasked to highlight important information as we read. I learned that there are 4 steps (sometimes 5). Here is some information on the 4 different stages:

Stage 1: Low Growth
  • There is no country remaining in stage 1
  • for the majority of this period people were hunters and gatherers
    • When food was easily obtained, a region's population increased
    • Population decreased when people were unable to locate enough animals or vegetation
Stage 2: High Growth
  • Rapidly declining death rates and very high natural increase
  • North America and Europe entered stage 2 in the 1750's as a result of the Industrial Revolution
    • As a result of this there were many more wealthy people and healthier communities
  • Stage 2 did not diffuse to Africa, Asia, and Latin America until around 1950
  • The late-twentieth-century push was caused by the medical revolution
    • Improved medical practices have eliminated many traditional causes of death in developing countries
Stage 3: Moderate Growth
  • A country moves from stage 2 to stage 3 of the demographic transition when the CBR begins to drop sharply
  • Economic changes in stage 3 occur when there is fewer offspring
  • Most countries in Europe and North America moved into stage 3 in the first half of the twentieth century
  • For many countries in Asia, Latin America, and Mexico this movement took place in the second half of the twentieth century
Stage 4: Low Growth
  • A country reaches stage 4 of the demographic transition when the CBR declines  to the point where it equals the CDR and the NIR approaches 0. This is called zero population growth.
  • ZPG may occur when the CBR is still slightly higher than the CDR because some females die before childbearing years
  • ZPG has the TFR that results in a lack of change in the total population over a long term.
  • People who have access to a wider variety of birth control methods and are more likely to use some of them
