Carona talk

So I'm not really sure if I'm supposed to write a blog for today but I am just in case. We took the whole class to talk about the Corona Virus today which I actually think was a good idea. It was very helpful and I think it was very much needed. I know a lot of people aren't excited about these cyber days but I actually am. Even if we still have to log in to a class starting at 8, I wouldn't need to get up early to get ready and leave the house so I don't mind getting up at 8 instead of 6.

Greece Videos pt 2

Today we finished the first of the Greece videos.

Pottery:

• vases
• the inside was more important than the outside
• painted with a style called realism 

Olympics:

• also known as Olympia
• men from all over Greece would go to Athens to compete against each other
• started in 700 BCE
• no materialistic prize for winning
• bragging rights
• being considered a hero
• women couldn't compete

Isagoras:

• aristocrat
• raised to believe he would get power
• seized control of Athens and then betrayed it
• tried to make Athens under Spartan rule 

The Revolution:

• Where ordinary people took destiny into their own hands
• they revolted against Isagoras and the Spartans and ostracized them
• the first revolution in history  

Cleisthenes:

• didn't give power to the aristocrats 
• didn't declare himself as a tyrant 
• had to find a way to give the people power
• invented democracy

Here are the notes I took from the video we started watching today:

508 BCE- Athenian revolution

Cleisthenes-

• born around 570 BCE
• born into one of the richest families in Greece

Herodotus= first greek historian 

The life expectancy of Athenians was 15 years

memorized poetry and passed it on

having a heroic lifestyle was very ideal; you should strive to be the best at what you do

Pisistratus- 

• first tyrant
• Cleisthenes brother-in-law
• gained power by pretending a woman was Athena
• turned to common Athenians for support
• reduced taxes and freed loans 

The end of the Greece PowerPoint

Today we had a pop quiz in class and I think I only got 1 or 2 wrong so that's good. We also finished the Greece PowerPoint so here are my notes:

Aristotle:

• Was a student of Plato
• He helped foster the idea of Athens as an intellectual destination
• He had a school (the Lyceum) where he focused on cooperative research and building on knowledge gathered from all over the world
• dreamed of having knowledge easily accessible in one location
• taught Alexander the Great

He wrote on topics such as:

• logic-physics-biology
• ethics-politics-rhetoric
• motion-theater-poetry
• metaphysics-psychology-dreams

Philosophers

Today we learned about 3 philosophers, here are my notes:

Socrates-

• looked into science and logic rather than gods
• created the Socratic method
• during his trial, he described himself as a gadfly and Athens a horse 

Plato-

• a student of Socrates
• wrote out Socrates' teachings
• described his trial in "apology"
• "republic" was written about Socrates's discussion of justice

Athens v. Sparta

Today we talk about Athens and Sparta so here are some of the notes I took:

Spartans:

• very warlike people
• known for their infantry 
• spartan boys started training at the age of 7

Athens:

• had an amazing navy
• the most effective weapon is the trireme
• phalanx

Persian empire v. Greece:

• greeks have homecourt advantage
• Persia is bigger
• Greeks had trained fighters
• Persia had archers, cavalry, and a paid military

Gods and Goddesses

Today we started part 2 of our Greece unit, here are some of the notes I took:

Greeks had a unique relationship with their gods because they interacted with humans.

Posiden- 

• King of the sea, rivers, floods, and earthquakes
• interfered with Odesseyus when he was trying to get back home

Aphrodite- 

• goddess of love, beauty, desire, and sexuality 
• had lovers of men and gods
• Ares (god), Adonis (demi-god), and Anchises (human)

Dionysus-

• god of wine
• son of Zeus and Semele

Zeus-

• ruler of heaven and earth 
• father of Athena
• god of the sky, weather, thunder, lightning, law, order, and justice
• had a temper
• known for throwing lightning bolts

Athena- 

• goddess of wisdom, skill, warfare, intelligence, battle strategy, and handicrafts
• was born from Zeus' head fully formed and armored 
• a special patron of heroes
• the patron of Athens

Apollo- 

• god of music, arts, knowledge, healing
• Zeus was his father
• Artemis was his twin sister
• associated with the sun; his sister with the moon

Demeter-

• goddess of grain, harvest, and agriculture
• Zeuses sister
